Quality all the way
The key to a healthy handraised parrot starts at day one, It is always preferred to have the baby chick started under the parents, The parents provide the chick with bacteria that aids in healthy crop and intestinal flora.
They also provide antibodies that will bolster the chicks immune system. These two elements are imperative if the chick is going to prosper to its its full potential and acheive a long and healthy life span.
The next important aspect of a healthy hand raised chick is the expertise of the handraiser combined with the quality of food fed to the chick.
The handraiser must be punctual in feeding times with an awareness of the general level of hygiene and heat required by the chick.
If any of these elements are lacking, a substandard bird will be the possible outcome. e.g. to much heat dehydrates the bird, not enough food or poor quality food stunts the bird.
When the chick is weaned it may look healthy to the untrained eye when covered by feathers, but there are generally tell tale signs.
One of the most noticeable being the feet. They should be chubby well padded , in a parrot that has at some stage struggled you will notice the feet bearing a resemblance to a matchstick, thin dried in appearance.
This generally will not change throughout the parrots life. The young bird could also appear "wingy" where as the body doesn't quite seem in proportion to the wings.
If a parrot exhibits any of these signs externally you can only imagine what stress it has been put on the organs internally.
